From Joe Alton Foss:
From the Civil War Veterans file, Maine State Archives: John Q.A. Foss
was of Machias, age 20, and a private in Company D, 6th Infantry
Regiment, Maine Volunteers. He enlisted November 6, 1861, mustered
December 12, 1861, and was discharged November 5, 1862. He then
reenlisted March 11, 1863 in Company H, 1st Heavy Artillery. He was
of dark complexion, with gray eyes, black hair, and he stood 5′-10″
tall. He was a seaman. See also: Civil War Pension records, National
Archives. John made application, number 91377, certificate number
65273. His file contains a letter dated 17th August 1886 to Hon. J.C.
Black, Court of Pensions, written by T.H. Dinsmore, U.S. War Claims
Agent, who remarked that “… John Q.A. Foss is the most peculiar man
I have ever met. ..I have been laboring with him to furnish evidence
many times last year. … Somewhat of a crank.” It seems that John
was on duty at Fort Hill, apparently near Petersburg, Virginia, and
came down with a severe case of dysentery from long continuous
marching and exposure “in the swamps of Virginia under [Gen.]
McClellan.” He was discharged by a Surgeon’s Certificate at Camp
Convalescent, Fort Ellsworth, Alexandria, Virginia, 5 November 1862,
for phthisis pulmonalis. In later life, John was quite itinerant and
lived in Philadelphia, then many places in Maine. He did not marry and
there were no heirs. In the 1900 census of Machias, he is shown as
John I.A. Foss, born in June 1835, and living with Israel Putnam Foss
and family.
